Hardy Whitebred Shorthorn calves survive minus
13 degrees
Adrian Wheelwright who farms near Forres, Morayshire
reports that two of his Whitebred Shorthorn heifers purchased
from Messrs Whitfield, Byers Hall, Northumberland, calved,
unaided, outside during the night in the first week of
January when night time temperatures reached as low as
minus 13 degrees Celsius. The calves (both bulls) were
well footed and suckled when they were checked the next
morning.
Mr Wheelwright commented; “This shows the hardiness
of the Whitebred Shorthorn - the fact that heifers showed
the good mothering ability to be able to look after their
calves in these temperatures is a definate plus for the
breed.”
